روانشناسی اگزیستانسیال اثر اروین دیوید یالوم، استاد دانشگاه استنفورد، از برجسته ترین و تاثیرگذارترین آثار روانشناسی درچند دهه اخیر است.این کتاب هم راهنمایی برای درمانگران است و هم نوعی درمان به شمار می رود؛ هر کس که آن را بخواند، عمیقا تحت تاثیر قرار می گیرد و خردمند تر می شود انگار چندین ساعت به گفت و گو با کسی نشسته که عزمش را برای عبور از ژرف ترین مشکلات بشری جزم کرده است. داستایوفسکی، تولستوی، کافکا، سارتر، کامو و بسیاری دیگر با نویسنده هم آوا شده اند تا از دلواپسی های غایی بشر بگویند.
مخاطبان اصلی کتاب، دانشجویان و روان درمانگران بالینی اند ولی به دلیل سبک قابل فهم و عاری از اصطلاحات تخصصی اش، برای خواننده ی معمولی نیز قابل درک و بسیار جذاب است. یالوم پس از نوشتن این کتاب و برای بسط نظریه ی اگزیستانسیال بود که به ابزار داستان روی آورد و آثاری چون "وقتی نیچه گریست" و "مامان و معنی زندگی" را خلق کرد. او خود "روان درمانی اگزیستانسیال" را کتاب مرجع تمامی آثاری دانسته که پس از آن به رشته ی تحریر درآورده است.
