When this book was first proposed, the intentionwas to supply illustrations to the catalogueundertaken by Dickins for the British School atAthens in 1912, and to add in a short textreferences to publications and discoveries madesince that catalogue appeared. But it wasimpossible for Payne to dabble; and in adetermination to clarify his own ideas on theproblems involved, he undertook the formidabletask of reconsidering as a whole the archaicfree sculptures of the Acropolis-and inevitablymuch archaic sculpture elsewhere-of datingthem and of establishing their relationships withone another.
